To celebrate the National Holiday, acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou
will stage a brand-new production of Turandot at the iconic Olympic stadium on
October 6 and 7.
Helmed by director Zhang Yimou, and the creative team behind the Beijing
Olympic Games Opening Ceremony including Chen Weiya and Sha Xiaolan, the new
operatic production promises advanced concepts and modern approaches. Multimedia
techniques will be used to create magnificent scenes. The world’s largest video
images, projected by 32 cine-projectors on a 1,000-square-meter screen with 40
million pixels, were deployed to accommodate the audience at the gigantic venue.
The high definition video will generate the dramatic tension of a sentimental
princess of beauty. While there have been many versions of Turandot staged
worldwide, Zhang is expected to bring the audience a completely new,
audio-visual feast, with fashionable modern elements.
On the list of performers are Chinese tenors Dai Yuqiang and soprano Yao
Hong. With the total investment of the opera reaching 120 million Yuan, this
show will be the largest cultural event since the opening and closing ceremony
of the Beijing Olympic Games.
