At 8 p.m. on August 8, exactly a year after the opening of the Beijing
Olympic Games, the Italian Super Cup kicked off at the nearly full-packed Bird’s
Nest with a seating capacity of 80,000 people. The match was between the
newly-crowned Series A champion Inter Milan and reigning Cup champions
Lazio.
Matuzalem opened the scoring for Lazio in the 19th minute of the second half
after picking captain Tommaso Rocchi’s deflected freekick in the box. Three
minutes later, Rocchi chipped a superb shot at the edge of the area in a counter
attack to beat a helpless Julio Cesar. Samuel Eto’o pulled one back with a small
angle shot on the left side following a defensive error. But the first goal made
by the Cameroonian striker for his new club could not change the result. Lazio
sank Inter Milan 2-1 to take the Italian Super Cup.
